Differences Between Cold Asphalt And Hot Asphalt

asfalt-uygulamasi

Asphalt is a high-quality road construction material, a type of petroleum by-product, that can be used in almost every area where vehicles pass on highways and asphalt plantof is asphalted as a result of its correct operation. This by-product can have many different hardnesses, from a non-flowing, durable form to a solid form. Today, it has many areas of use, but the one we know best is that it operates in the field of road construction. The use of asphalt during quality road construction increases safety and comfort. However, when there are some differences in road properties and asphalt paving, it is necessary to mention two different asphalt types: hot asphalt and cold asphalt.

cold-asphalt

Cold asphalt; It is a type of asphalt known for its lower cost and easier use in cases where it is difficult to use hot asphalt to support the bitumen part damaged due to deterioration and deformation. It is mixed with natural stones such as aggregate/gravel and laid on the road surface in cold form. It is a very economical option when used for temporary fixes, minor patches and repairs when weather conditions are not good. When applying cold asphalt, the area planned to be repaired must be adequately excavated. It is important to ensure that the edge of the excavated pit is cut vertically and the pit must be completely cleaned. After this process, cold asphalt should be filled into the pit and care should be taken to ensure that it is in the shape of a slight bump. Cold asphalt should be compacted with a hand tamper, shovel, compactor or roller, depending on the structure of the application area.

Hot asphalt consists of aggregate dried and heated at 145-160ºC, and bitumen made into a viscous liquid by heating to approximately the same temperature, in certain proportions of at least 3 different grain size groups, including aggregate coarse, fine and fillers, in accordance with the mixture design ratios. asphalt plantIt is obtained by mixing . Although the ratios of aggregate and bitumen in the mixture vary depending on the layer in which the mixture will be used and its properties, approximately 95% of the mixture is aggregate and 5% is bitumen. Hot mix asphalt is heated before being poured and poured onto the road at over 300°C. Stationary and mobile asphalt plantsIt is obtained by mixing hot mix asphalt is obtained. Since the asphalt is heated before being poured onto the road, its viscosity decreases. As the viscosity of liquids decreases, flow rates increase. Hot mix asphalt is resistant to weather conditions. Wind, floods and heat absorption of asphalt; It melts snow and ice faster than other coating materials. Hot mix asphalt can open the road because it cools down very quickly. Stationary and mobile asphalt plants strength, hot mix asphalt is the most durable pavement asphalt type; Therefore, it is used on high traffic roads and highways. Cold mix asphalt is not strong enough for normal vehicle traffic. Hot asphalt is flexible. Although cold asphalt is not as strong as hot asphalt, it is much more economical and is an excellent option for temporary fixes when weather conditions are not suitable. You should keep in mind that the advantages you will gain by choosing hot asphalt will be quite serious in the long run. that’s why stationary and mobile asphalt plants should be preferred. When choosing between hot asphalt and cold asphalt, it will be sufficient to consider seasonal conditions. However, hot asphalt is resistant to weather conditions. It has rapid cooling feature and minimizes road closure time. Areas where hot mix asphalt is applied are more durable than cold mix asphalt.
